I'm Back! .. to.. Miss Saigon Post a Comment
Sorry for away for so long... :-)
Within this 6 months, I changed two new jobs. This was not a pleasant experience but now I know better what I really want. During this 6 months time, frankly I just do not have mood to write anything about food. All the food that I ate is either tasteless or I was rushing.. that's the reason why I didn't write anything about them. I'm sorry for those that visited my website. I really don't feel like writing anything in the past few months with all the changes took placed.
Finally.. thing gets better now. I finally in the mood to write something.
I found out Ms. Saigon from somebody's food blog. Penang doesn't have any Vietnamese food. Ms. Saigon surprised me. I wouldn't able to compare their food with the original Vietnamese food but.. I think they tasted great! Part of the reasons.. maybe is the "tauke soh" that serving customers in the restaurant - she walked in her style, and talked in her style and served customer with pride. She is a "special" tau ke soh.. :-)

Vietnamese food to me, is about their rice paper spring roll and pho. This time I didn't order any of them but the glass noodle below that looks like Laksa noodle salad. I know what you are thinking.. ya.. right.. it looks very plain and shouldn't taste good, right? I thought so until I tried it. The gravy is made of lemongrass juice and other ingredient - it's sourish and refreshing. I love eating it with the mint leaves and because of this dish... I keep coming back to Ms. Saigon. I think this should be one of their signature dish! (But I realized that they have changed the chicken meat from thigh to breast meat recently.. :-(.. not as good as before anymore)

Eel Cake is one of their promotional items. You might not able to get it anymore when you go there but it's alright. I don't really taste the eel in it. So.. forget about it. You could try something better and tell us!

Lastly, this is a must try!! Apple Pie served in such a presentable manner! I love it! The apple slices looked like rose and the pastry below is so thin and oil free! The combination of it with the chocolate sauce is just perfect! If they could think of a way for me to eat it in one shot will be even better because I would have to mess it up while eating it. Well.. I just don't feel like doing so because it just look like a masterpiece of dessert!

Prison Theme Restaurant @ Obake-Ya 4 Comments
Theme Restaurant is common in Japan & Taiwan but definitely not Penang. But recently.. we have 2 interesting theme restaurants in Penang - Prison & Toilet like Restaurant. I have been to the Prison like restaurant for quite a few times but unfortunately these few weeks I have been tight up with personal matters. Now only I have mood to write about it... terribly sorry for my delay~~ :-)

Obake-Ya is a Japanese restaurant. Although the idea of Japanese food & prison are totally irrelavant but... this is the restaurant. :-)

If only 2 of you comes to this place, I would suggest you sit at here rather than the table. The chair is pretty comfortable.

Before I came here, I have heard from friends that they do have a handsome bartender... hehe.. here he is.~ :-)

The entrance and the cashier are decorated like halloween.. :-D I don't think their decoration is very nicely done because the theme and the decoration at cashier (with the japanese cat and other feng shui stuff) just could not jive together. However it's still acceptable. :-)

Ok... now come to food. I like this bento set because I'm now on diet and trying to avoid rice/noodle. This bento set has everything that I like except rice.. :-D It has shasimi, tempura & sushi and comes with soup, fruits, salad & egg slices. This is my favourite set and it costs only RM 14.

I have no comment about cha soba because this is the first time I try cha soba. I just couldn't compare.

Salad presentation is special but very difficult to eat. ehmmm... I think they better work on this.. :-)

The mocktail looks cool but still doesn't jive with the theme. This looks like more suitable for hospital more than prison. :-)

Eventhough so... I still have visited this restaurant for 3 times. Probably it's still new or probably is whenever I told my friend about it.. they would definitely want to give it a try. Food is ok... their service used to be extremely slow but I noticed it has improved at my 3rd visit. Good job.. keep it up~ :-)

Better than My Expectation @ Kenribbean Post a Comment
Penang is really a heaven for cheap good food. A RM 10 nett western food set lunch at a cafe at Gurney Drive. I just couldn't believe this is true. Just like Prontip & Little Cottage, Kenribbean is providing reasonable quality of food and ambience for the amount that customers pay. The set lunch menu is good. RM 10 nett for soup, main course and drink. How much a chicken chop costs in hawker center? I guess it should be around RM 6 - 7. With additional RM 3, you get a soup and a glass of drink in a relaxing environment.

This is their fish and chip. The taste is ok and better than some of the hawker center. presentation is ok. The only flaw that I would comment is the french fries are too oily. They might want to improve that.

This is their BBQ chicken. The chicken served without the fattening chicken skin (I like that!).

The set comes with a soup and a glass of drink (quite a big glass... I like it).

This is a restaurant/cafe that targeting working people. If they could continue to improve the ambience of the cafe, I guess they would become another Little Cottage. Their other menu items look good too and they are giving 20% discount for a-la-carte items. If you are bored with the economy rice stall in town, probably you should consider this place once in a while. hehe... I am organizing a company lunch there tomorrow.. because this place not charging any taxes and I'm so sure it would meet the budget~ :-)

Never Get Dissapointed @ Chili's 1 Comments
Since lthemanz mentioned about Chili's, let me skip my Ipoh trip and come to Chili's first.
I was not in mood for eating last Friday because lin7702 has decided to resign. This indirectly means that we will no longer go out for lunch together everyday.. sob.. sob.. I took her for lunch at Chilli's because partly is to farewell with her and I want to eat Chili's too... haha!

Poor us~ As poor office ladies, we only manage to eat 1 starter and 1 main course. Well.. but that's enough for our stomach.

This is the starter. I forgot the name. We picked it, mainly is because it is the cheapest in the starter menu.. haha! But as usual.. Chili's never dissapoint me. Even this is the cheapest starter, it still tastes great!! The sauce in the middle of the plate is the key.. it just made us feel hungry. It really served the purpose as a starter! :-)

The next thing that we have ordered is Lamb Shank. This is an ordinary dish that you could get in any western restaurant, Secret Recipes, Little Italy and many other restaurants. But... do not underestimate the deliciousness of Chilli's Lamb Shank. It's just amazing!

We looked at the dish served - stunned for a while for its presentation - started to snap photos! :-D Using my camera.. using her camera.. until we are satisfied. When we made the first cut on the lamb, Oh My Goodness! Look at the juicy red meat wrapped in the cooked lamb. These are all well cooked but still it tastes sooo juicy and great!!

I have nothing much to say about Chili's. It's just perfect. The key difference of Chili's with other small good restaurants is.. the quality should be consistent. (I said should be because I have only tried twice) Whenever you don't feel like spoil your mood by the food you ordered, try Chili's. It will never disappoint you.

Ipoh Famous Egg Tart @ Hong Kee Post a Comment
Finally it's turn to introduce my favorite - Egg Tart~~ If you follow what I have shared so far, you would easily notice that I am crazy for Portugese egg tart. I remember seeing Hong Kee Egg tart in the 18 hours Ipoh makan-makan trip chinese article that have been circulated around thru email for quite some times ago.. and I tried to look for it. Unfortunately the article didn't provide address or map.. I asked all my Ipoh friends. Amazingly none of them know about Hong Kee! I checked internet.. checked all the famous food blog.. this is not even been mentioned or introduced!! How could that be!! Luckily one of my old friends' housemate is Ipohan and knew where Hong Kee is!

Hong Kee is a pastry stall in Weng Seng kopitiam. It's a corner Shop at the street same row with former Super Kinta & Pasar Besar/Main Market. I'm sure most of the Ipohan would think.. "Ohhhhh.. that one!!" Yea.. but if you are looking for Hong Kee shop, let me tell you.. there is none! I'm not sure is it rumour or truth - Hong Kee only produce 90 egg tarts per day - make sure you do advance booking before you go!

We couldn't find a parking lot, my friend helped me to quickly collect the egg tart & sha kei ma. This is how Hong Kee packed their egg tart in a small box.

Their egg tart is conventional egg tart. The custard filling is very smoooooothh while the pastry is magically layered as you could see in the photos. How could it has so many layers and still remain neat and firm. Don't ever think that the base would be as thick as the edge - the base is just thick enough to support the filling only. Amazzzingggg!

Let me show you a quick comparison to differentiate a mundane Egg Tart & a marvellous Egg Tart. I'm not doing this in purpose. When I was home happily with my Hong Kee egg tart.. My friend bought me another box of egg tart from Sg. Petani. I appreciate her thoughtfulness but.. unfortunately I have another box of egg tart with me.. sob sob! End up I have to eat them for days! After a few days I kept them in the fridge, this is how they look like.

As expected, both the egg tart's filling shrink and dried up. But.. look at the pastry! The left hand side is the mundane Egg Tart no longer in good shape while the famous Hong Kee egg tart's pastry still looks firm and neat~

Ipoh Tao Hua @ Funny Mountain 3 Comments
I didn't expect much from this Tao Hua because I think I have tried the best. Amazingly they could still surprise me with different texture - extremely hot (nearly burnt my tougue), smoothier and softer. If cheese is made of cow's milk, then Tao Hua is made of soya milk, so it should be in the same family with Tofu but in a softer, smoothier texture. It melted in your mouth without a bite - just swallow it.. but becareful - it's hot!

They only sells from lunch time to afternoon - so be there on the right time. I asked if I could pack it back to Penang (Although I was afraid it will break into pieces when I was home) but they said cannot :-( because it just couldn't last that long if we didn't keep in fridge. Tot I could show off to mom that I found a even softer one than the one in Chai Leng Park.. :-)

The shop is small and no chair & table. Customers will just eat on the spot under the hot sun at road side. Eventhough under the umbrella but still hottt... sweat, sweat.. and more customers coming in.

These are the cars that queue up to buy Tao Hua. People buy, People eat, People goes... Looks like the shop owner has no intention to expand. Unlike the Yee Hup biscuit - the business just keep growing until now they have a factory that producing the biscuit.

1st Stop in Ipoh @ Ming Court Dim Sum Post a Comment
Yeah!!! I missed Ming Court Sesame Porridge (right word to call 芝麻糊?) for quite some time~ I just couldn't find it in any dim sum shop in Penang~ Finally I'm back to Ipoh again for it!! I asked the cashier at the counter - do they sell the sesame porridge powder? They laughed but I'm serious although very embarrassing! :-p

This is my favorite Prawn Dumpling (Har Kao) - Look at the luminous dumpling skin with 3 fresh prawns squeeze in it... yummy yummy!! Some of the penangnite might argue, No, No, No... Penang dim sum is good too. Well.. you might be right.. but if you just focusing on one type of dim sum. For Example, the prawn dumpling (Har Kao), you can really tell the difference between what we have in Dai Tong, Tou Yuen, Dim Sum House, Bali Hai and Ming Court! Ming Court's really outstanding among all~ The size of the dim sum in Ming Court is relatively small compare to what we have in Penang - it's just like a miniature! The ingredient is "extremely" fresh (becoz I don't think the ingredient in Penang is not fresh)!

Same thing applies for the Meat Dumpling (Siu Mai) - the skin is luminous and transparent, the content has only purely lean meat in it! As for the Lo Bak Kou, luckily, we have other equally good one in Penang namely Dai Tong and others.

Bad thing about Ming Court is it's always crowded and there are always customer waiting while you are eating. It really ruins the appetite a little bit.

Lastly is this is how the shop looks like. My good eating trip to Ipoh... just started!! :-) More to come....

Before Departing to Ipoh... @ Ng Kee Biscuit 5 Comments
Before departing to Ipoh, thinking of buying something for June. Rather than buying her only the Tao Sha Pia, I bought her my favourite - Ng Kee Pepper Biscuit!!

Unlike conventional pepper biscuit that is round shape, their pepper biscuit is rectangular with irregular edges. The thickness is not even and I would say it looks like Chinese cookies! Don't judge the biscuit by its look, It is just irresistible great! It is freshly baked, thin, crispy and the light aromatic pepper smell will make you couldn't stop from eating.. piece by piece... until you shout at yourself:"Stop!!! You are getting fatter!!"

The packaging...

This is their egg tart. Unfortunately.. not my favorite. Their egg tart is dough based... and it's not as good as I thought. I still prefer the pastry crust based and especially the yummy yummy Portuguese style.

Dunno where to buy the biscuit for your wedding? They sell it! :-) I love seeing these wedding biscuit although I don't like to eat them.. :-D

Lastly is their mooncake - they have coconut, red bean and other flavors, a huge stack of mooncakes tempts your appetite.. Nooooo.. I shouldn't eat anymore!

Post X'mas Birthday Celebration
(Part II - Zingdo)!!
Post a Comment
We had the celebration in Zingdo with the cake that I posted few days ago. If you wonder where is Zingdo, that's normal. This is the Korean Restaurant at Gurney Plaza (Formerly where Breeks was). I guess you would say: Ohhhhhh... That one! Yea... that one. I am not sure what's wrong with the shop, I just don't seem to able to remember the shop name until I purposedly search for their name.. and I found it from their logo... :-p

Their Bibimbap looks delicious - Bibimbap is a very common Korean dish - I called it "mixed rice" because the rice is below the colorful dishes such as chicken slices, carrot slices, beansprout, kimchi veggie & pickled cucumber. Just stir them like crazy before you eat...... and pour some Kimchi sauce in it would be yummy~~~

My boss ordered their Bulgogi (recommended by me.. and he said good choice.. hehe) For first timer for Korean food, I would usually recommend this dish because it is fun to "cook" the meat in the sizzling hot plate! Good thing that I always remember about Zingdo is.. they are always caring enough to put the paper cylinder around the hotplate so that you won't spoil your shirt~

Their ginseng chicken soup is very good too, you could find not only chicken in the soup but also a ginseng in it. I should have taken the photo of the ginseng~~ aiya~~

The seafood tang hoon is gooooddd~~ My favourite used to be Ginseng chicken soup but I have just changed to this seafood cold tang hoon! It is very appetizing and you just couldn't stop from eating. I nearly finished all even though we ordered this for sharing... :-p

Their fried mushroom is okay.. as usual.. all the deep fried food is good~

To me, Zingdo is a modern Korean restaurant or cafe. You have to order the food at the counter, and they will deliver the food to you. Their service is okay if they are not too busy. When they are busy, you would probably have to take the food yourself to make things faster, you might need to clear the table by yourself, and they might not know what to do if you have a birthday celebration. The food is good as usual but service vise... could be further improved a little bit. Do not get me wrong.. I didn't have any bad experience with them but just think that it could be even better... :-)

Post X'mas Birthday Celebration
(Part I - Bread History)!!
Post a Comment

I was so lazy to write after X'mas - hehe - Can I call this "Post X'mas Syndrome"?! Surprised when I saw this nicely decorated lock cake! We have bought this cake to celebrate my friend's birthday at Gurney Plaza. This cake finally makes me wake up from holiday day mood (Well.. I have been in holiday mood for weeks - hehe - clearing 12 days annual leaves) The lock cake tastes good - It's not too sweet and the cream was light. Eventhough we couldn't find knife or plate in Zing Do, but still finish the whole cake using spoon.

Thought the other Bread History Cake would be good as well - I bought their Green Tea Swiss Roll. Green Tea sponge cake with fresh cream rolled together with "red bean" in the middle of the cake (Yea.. It's not choco chip.. I guess they are trying to give us some surprise!) Unfortunately I taste much of green tea flavour at all - probably I wasn't fully recovered from the year end flu yet (Let's see what lin7702 would say about the green tea cake..)

Food review is rather subjective, it's always good to have more people write about the same thing. If you happen to try their cake.. Feel free to share!!
